The United States has expressed strong support for the recent developments in the ongoing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, following a key meeting held today in Kuala Lumpur. The General Border Committee’s meeting marks an important step toward cementing a ceasefire and setting up an ASEAN-led observation mechanism to monitor the situation.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the progress, emphasizing the importance of the commitments made by both countries. "President Trump and I expect Cambodia and Thailand to fully honor their commitments to end this conflict," Rubio said. "The ceasefire and the ASEAN observation mechanism are critical for achieving lasting peace and stability in the region."
Rubio also praised Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his leadership in hosting the negotiations. The Prime Minister's involvement was crucial, especially considering his role in co-organizing the July 28 Special Meeting alongside the United States, which aimed to address the conflict.
The U.S. government reiterated its readiness to support Malaysia, ASEAN, Cambodia, and Thailand as they work towards implementing the ceasefire and establishing the monitoring measures. Officials hope these steps will lead to a peaceful resolution and greater stability in Southeast Asia.
